Thier is nothing like a cool fall night with coonhounds trailing a hot track. I hunted with my grandfather years ago when I was barely big enough to walk those are memories you never forget. I just got back into hunting about three years ago it's relaxing an exciting coon hunting jus like something anyone enjoys it will send chills down ur spine when you hear those dogs strike up an old coon an put it tree like music to your ears the most awesome sound in the world hearing a pack of hounds treeing.

I wish I knew of this special place 14 years ago when I lost my Redbone Nt Ch Deepwoods Drifter. He was one of the best hounds to ever run the Missouri Hills and it pains me to know he could of been buried here. To this day it is still hard to discuss him without getting a knot in my throat. I guess the Red Fern works in different ways.I gave my brother all my equipment,(dog box, tracker, etc) the day after I buried him and have not hunted since. Maybe some day when life slows down a little I will return.

Last year at Christmastime we went looking at the local shelter for a puppy. We fell in love with the skinny brindle pup with the big ears when we heard that loud bawl come out of that tiny body and we have never turned back since. Mama dog looked like a black and tan and we think papa was a Plott - that little girl can put her paws on my shoulders now. We have experienced firsthand the rare devotion a coon hound can inspire. She has been full of surprises and challenges, but we would sooner sell our house in the suburbs and head for the hills than part with our girl. Bless all you coon dogs and hunters out there!

I must agree that coonhounds are the best dogs! My old boy is 13 and has been a great companion. He is not a hunter, because raccoons are my second favorite companion and had one for 13 years! If I did not have such a small house and yard now, I would never even consider a different breed!

Jeff and I are going to see our dog Train that is now buried there. We are proud that he had a proper burial place. He won so many hunts and loved to be out in the woods treeing coons.

I went to the visit the graves many years ago on the way back from a weekend in Memphis, after a Graceland and Beale St.pilgrimage. I was touched when I got there and realized how much these dogs were loved by these men and I still had yet to have my first dog. Last December while I was loading up the car for a weekend before Christmas at the Sister-in-laws and this very energetic yet skinny , dog kept getting under the house , after tearing bup some insulation 0I didn't have much choice but to put her inside in a kennel for the day while we were gone, We had a couple of dogs by then . After deciding to find here a new home , she had no tags on and we did not know what to do with her. After a few weeks the gawkey , turned to beautiful and the craziness turned into pure love. I had no idea what she was but the vet informed me she is an English Red tick Hound and a purebred one at that . A real great spicimen he declared. Any I fell in much love with her and named her Paris Hilton. She is the prettiest Redtick I have ever seen , I just love her and she loves her"daddy" too!!

Today, August 26, 2010, I visited the cemetery- I was there alone for about 1 hour.It is a sacred place. Knowing I was with about 185 dogs filled my eyes with tears. I have always loved dogs- though never had a coon dog. I photographed many of them. Stories like "Where the Red Fern Grows" and "O;d Yeller" rip my heart out- I must stop typing because, again my eyes are filled with tears ....

I took my seven year old grandson to visit the coon dog cemetary last year. We were on the way to Oxford,MS to visit my daughter and her family. I always wanted to turn off the road and make a visit every time I saw the green sign on the highway. It was quite an experience and one my grandson won't soon forget. We took pictures and created a slide show of our visit.I hope it fueled his sense of adventure and his understanding of how much our animals can be loved and revered.
