I visited the cemetary today and wa struck by the fact that these hunters must have surely loved their dogs. I couldn't help but think that they must have a lot of love: for the mountains, for their families, and for their country. You'll be interested to know that, while I was there today, a man and woman drove up to visit. We talked and their names were Steve and Eunice. They were from England, and while touring our country, they heard about and viisited the Coon Dog Cemetary. They took several pictures and were very impressed. As was I.

We visited the cemetery earlier this month.
Our red coon hound, Clyde, has some type of
cancer and we don't know how much longer he
will be around. We would like to bury him
up there when the time comes. Is there any
way to contact yall without opening a yahoo account.

I'm not a "dog" person, but I decided to stop by the cemetery today. I was so touched by all the love evidenced in the care of the graves and the variety of headstones. I came away quite teary.

Thank you for caring.

I want to say thanks, you brought tears to my eyes, and more joy to my heart than you can ever understand. My old hound Rip, belongs in a place like this. He died twenty one years ago, at 17.5 years old. his last year hunting at 17 treed 150 racoons that winter. the amount of heart, drive, loyalty, and pride that Rip showed to his family and life was unbielvable. He had a soul. if you have a soul there is a better place. you can call me prejudice all you want. I would kill you over my dog, would you kill me over yours, think not, Rip would fight to death to protect his family, thats the difference, houndsmen have a heart and soul bond together above all.

I have passed by many times going on vacation but never made time to visit but always wanted to. We had a day off at work so me and 2 coworkers loaded up to come down for a visit. We enjoyed every minute browsing and taking photos. It's an awesome place for sure. I just wish i knew the welcome center had t-shirts, will be back with the family. Coon Dogs forever...

We had to come to Red Bay for repairs on our Motorhome. We were not sure how to find the location but driving down 247 to Florence we saw the road. We have all the respect for a Coon Dog and the talent, dedication and instinct they have and the loyalty to its owners. We drove to visit and show our respect. You are find folks who have taken care of such a loyal companion. We were touched and felt your lost. We only have a laodog but we would do anything for him becuase of the loyalty and devotion. Take care of this scared place and we thank you for allowing us to visit.

My friend Doug and I were passing thru on the highway and saw the sign for the cemetery. Altho we were 8 hours from home, we detoured to go by the cemetery and see what it was all about. We walked by every grave, read every headstone, and felt the love, respect and loyalty that the owners had for their hounds, and that the dogs had for their masters. Their was a lump in my throat the whole time. This is sacred ground, no doubt.

The website clearly states that they only allow STRAIGHT coon dogs into this cemetary. Which means they don't allow dogs to be buried there that run deer, opposums, armadillos, etc. As a coonhunter, I respect this. A pure coon dog will not be respected if it runs trash. Which is cleary understandable to a person that has dealt with dissatisfaction with a dog not worth a flip. The dog does not have to be a "Champion." This cemetary is intended for "Companions" who have fulfilled their purpose of pleasing their master and for being "Man's best friend." Coon hunting is a sport today but back in the old days, coon hunting was a means of income. There is nothing racist about this cemetary being "Coon dogs only." I have 6 dogs--2 are blueticks, 3 are mutts, and 1 is a bloodhound. One of the mutts has been my best friend from the second I layed eyes on her. I wouldn't insist on burying her where she doesn't belong. It would make absolutely no sense for a person to insist of buying a burial plot in the middle of someone else's family just because they insist on showing partiality. You make no sense getting on a "MEMORIAL WEBSITE" and talking a bunch of mess. That is awfully rude of a person. If you don't like it, then start your own "yappy lap dog" cemetary.

I read about you in an old issue of Time Magazine (from 1985) and I tought it was something great what you do with dogs. But, when I read the part where the owner refused to burie a little poodle toy, My ponit of view changed. It Ok, you hace the right to remain your cementery "free of no coon dogs" but the way the owner express itself about the dog was awful. The founder of that kind-of-racism cementery was a stupid, ignoran and macho wannabe.

Racism???? Because they only allow COONDOGS and no other breeds?

Here is the 1985 Time Magazine article that Lulaby is referring to:

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,959988,00.html

Mr. Underwood's response was so awful that you now believe the Coon Dog Cemetery is racist?

Excerpt from the 1985 Time Magazine Article:

A man with a toy poodle on a leash, a dog not much bigger than the word dog, hollered, "Hey, Mr. Underwood, where you want me to bury this one?"

Underwood, who is built something along the lines of an unlit, unfiltered Camel, looked down at the little fur ball and somehow made himself appear bigger. "I don't want nothing looks like that buried near Old Troop," he said.

The poodle owner chucked his charge under the chin and said, "Princess, they don't like you, hon."

Thier is nothing like a cool fall night with coonhounds trailing a hot track. I hunted with my grandfather years ago when I was barely big enough to walk those are memories you never forget. I just got back into hunting about three years ago it's relaxing an exciting coon hunting jus like something anyone enjoys it will send chills down ur spine when you hear those dogs strike up an old coon an put it tree like music to your ears the most awesome sound in the world hearing a pack of hounds treeing.
