I want to take a moment to remember my grandfather Herbert Clay Henson and O’Neal Bolton the former overseers of Coon Dog Cemetery and to thank those who are continuing to carry on the services held at the cemetery. I appreciate the plate honoring my grandfather and Mr. Bolton at cemetery site. Mr. Henson and Mr. Bolton had a true love for their dogs, the hunt, and for what Coon Dog Cemetery stands for. They enjoyed the time and services they supplied to the cemetery and the Labor Day Celebration held each year. Herbert Clay Henson had 5 dogs buried at the cemetery and I myself have one (Henson’s Blue Rock). So, I want to also thank everyone for their support of cemetery and for dropping by to visit this historical site.

My Black and Tan "Tug" was the best dog ever. It has been over 30 years and I still miss him.

I'm reading The Small Adventure of Popeye and Elvis, by Barbara O'Connor (I am 9), and I discovered that the Coonhound cemetery described in the book is THIS cemetery. I have two coonhounds (rescued) here in Chicago. They love to hunt the neighborhood coons, possums, bunnies and squirrels. Maybe we can bring Millie and Bonnie to this cemetery one day. I love my coonhounds!!!

My wife and I visited back in the summer of 2010 when we visited some friends who told us about the cemetary. Being birdhunters here we love all hunting dogs. There is nothing like hunting with a good dog, whatever the game might be. They all love to run and hunt and are always so eager to do it.
Seeing all the headstones and the feelings the good folks have for their coon dogs shows us just how attached we all get to those special dogs. And rightfully so, those dogs hunt for us with a determination and enthusiasm you just dont see anywhere else.
Thank you for a cemetary that has left its mark on our hearts forever. This is a special place and you feel it when you walk amongst the grounds.

My grandfather sold my daddy's champion coon dog "Space" for a '49 Ford, automatic rifle and $35 back in '69. Rumor has it, the man who bought him, buried him here. I can't wait to come visit the cemetary to see if we can find dad's ol' coon dog :)

My daughter and I stopped by the Coondog Memorial Graveyard this passed Tue. 9/12/12. I had been there before and wanted her to see it. I was as moved this time as I was before. This time there were flowers on all the graves. There were also pennies on some of the tome stones. We read in the brochure that there were Labor Day activites there. Can anyone tell me what the pennies represent. If you have not had a chance to go and visit, you must put it on your list. I garentee you will be moved.

A tradition of loved ones will not be forgotten and to bring good luck to the coin tosser like tossing a coin in a wishing well.

Thanks for the web site. I had heard of this graveyard a long time ago and never been able to find out more about it. I want to see a picture of the obelisk style stone tree with the hounds baying up it that I believe is there. I collect postcards and would love to acquire postcards showing the graveyard and that stone in particular. Are there any available??

Believe it or not, many coon hounds find their way to New Hampshire and Maine. Our rescue walker coon hound came with 12 others in a van to Portland, Maine. All were adopted out, hopefully, to good homes. While some are used for hunting here, most become pets. Our dog Reesie is originally from KY. Man, is she loud! But she went from a scrawny, neglected pup to a happy dog! Beautiful animals, and don't you just love the ears! Nice cemetery!!! Thanks for the site!

Coonhounds are all over the country as they are hunting dogs. Just like any other hunting dog breed.

You will even find them in South America, Africa and etc... as hunters from those countries also use Coonhounds to hunt with.

Coonhounds are not just a southern thing.

Coonhounds are used for coon hunting, bear hunting, lion hunting and etc...

I recently visited the coon dog cemetery and I was not able to locate Troop's grave. I would like to come back one day. Could you tell me where is grave is located in the cemetery. Thanks

Buckshot 8-22-2012 01:49 AM
When you are looking at the covered pavillion, Troops grave is located right at the left end of the Pavillion.

It is behind the tree with the sign that says "Only Cemetery Of It's Kind In The World".
